Satellite Image (Data) as Digital Evidence See Chapter 10 of the book for further reading

Although the use of satellite data in the courtroom has been limited, the data has great potential. As might otherwise be expected, the use of satellite images in legal proceedings in Nigeria is rare. There is certainly no rule prohibiting parties from submitting satellite imagery as evidence or prohibiting courts from relying on it. Of all the various data sources used in digital evidence, satellite imagery, (also classified as remote sensing and Google Earth Images) undoubtedly remained complex.

Imagery from satellites not only can assist a judge to understand the issues, in clear and concise pictures, it also helps maintain interest in otherwise dull and tedious explanations of the complex information. Only when courts understand the underlying techniques and methods are, they able to determine whether the methods employed are scientifically established, evaluate the expertise of expert witnesses, detect possible technical errors, and consider the possibility of alternative interpretations of events

The Focus of this Weekly Module

Because the Imagery from satellites not only assists the judge to understand the issues, in clear and concise pictures, the focus of this weekly module is on the use of satellite digital data and the imagery produced from that data in the admissibility processes in the courtroom
