A cell phone, compact in size, designed for mobility, seen as an incredibly personal device is a sophisticated two-way radio that operates within a cellular network. At the very basic, it is a simple computer with a CPU, memory, batteries, input interfaces such as keypad or mouthpiece and output interfaces such as a screen or earpiece. As a highly mobile communications device, it performs an array of functions ranging from that of a simple digital organiser to that of a low-end personal computer. Although compact, these handheld devices can contain personal information including call history, text messages, emails, digital photographs, videos, calendar items, memos, address books, passwords and credit card numbers. These devices can be used to communicate, exchange photographs, connect to social networks, blog, take notes, record and consume video and audio, sketch, access the Internet, and much more.

Because Cell phone has, in recent time, become an indispensable piece of evidence in criminal investigation, law enforcement agencies may use the information therein contained to establish the basis for obtaining search warrants or call detail records from service providers, and also use same as a piece of evidence at trial.

The Focus of this Weekly Module

To explore the principal legal issues related to the use of cell phone data as evidence at trial, this weekly module focuses on an exposition of the basic components of cellular mobile phone networks, its characteristics, contents, the investigative procedure and the admissibility concerns.
